Starting an internet business - the FIRST step

As mentioned in a couple of posts earlier, I attended an internet business workshop last month, a program of the Internet Marketing Center run by Wealth Mentors Sdn Bhd.

I’m not going to go through every details about the workshop, the content of which you can read from many ebooks that teach you on how to start internet business. The difference of attending a workshop vs reading an ebook is that you are able to have hands-on experience, and you get to see real life internet business examples - how keyword research can be carried out using certain keyword research tool, the type of niche internet business that people are already running but you’ve never thought of, etc. It’s quite a mind-opening experience.

I guess the most important thing I learned from the workshop is that - before you start an internet business, whether you are selling your own products, or being an affiliate marketer promoting other people’s products - you need to do RESEARCH. Lots of RESEARCH!

This is perhaps what have been missing the most in my online business endeavor. I did not perform enough keyword research to find out the vital information, e.g. what problems do people face and are having difficulty finding a solution, what keywords are effective to drive targeted traffic to my web pages, etc.

But, even before you research on your keywords, the FIRST step you need to take if you want to start an internet business (or for a brick-and-mortar business as matter of fact) is - to find out what you like to do or what your passion is! Turn your best skill or hobby into a business!

As with any business, you will be putting in a lot of effort and time to build it and develop it. If your business is not related to something you love doing, you may find yourself struggling to keep it alive even before the money starts rolling in!

After you have identified several hobbies or skills, then only you start to do keyword research, and a little bit of market research perhaps, to narrow down to one hobby/skill, followed by finding a niche market with the least competition to offer your product or expertise to. Examples of hobbies/skills that can be turned into a niche internet business - teach a parrot not to bite, how to keep bees, how to grow mushroom in your own garden, etc. You will be surprised that there are actually a significant number of people looking for such information.

In essence, to start out in the internet business world, avoid finding or creating a hot product to sell. Instead, create and provide solution or answers to a very specific problem that a small but highly-targeted group of people are desperately looking for. This is what has been termed as ‘niche marketing’.
