I really have to apologize for my long hiatus, and not being able to keep the home business ideas and blogging series going for 3 months! It’s a shame, I know.
Since the last post, I sort of took a break from my internet marketing activities and blogging routine. Most of my time has been spent on my hobby - beading and jewelry making. Do not think that I have stopped exploring ways of making money from home. In fact, I hope not too long in the future I will be able to turn my hobby into a business.
If you are not aware, selling handmade accessories or any handcrafted items is one of the most popular home-based business today. If you are producing the items yourself, you need only a small start up capital to buy the necessary materials. You can then sell your handmade crafts over the internet through your personal website or online stores, such as eBay or Etsy. In fact, the most important ‘capital’ you need here is your skill and creativity.
If you intend to get your goods from wholesalers, then you will need a larger start up fund. Of course, other issues like which wholesalers to buy from, how are you going to take orders, what shipping rates you are offering, how are you going to pack your items for delivery etc, also need to be sorted out before business is ready for operation. Again, you can sell those items over the internet or even set up a booth in flea markets if budget allows.
Whether or not a small-scale home business like this is able to flourish into a profitable business depends on several factors, including the type of handmade crafts you are selling and their demand in the market, competition in terms of price and quality, the extent of exposure your business is getting, whether you are aggressive in your marketing efforts.
What is so versatile with selling handicraft items from home is that you don’t have to do it on a full time basis at the beginning stage. It may be served as an additional source of income initially, while you continue to learn and improve your skills in making the crafts. When you are gaining profit consistently and sufficiently to replace your main source of income, you can then have the option to keep it as a part-time ‘job’ or expand it into a full-fledge business.
If you are interested in starting a home-based craft business, I will have a couple of articles up next week. So, stay tuned!
(Don’t worry, I shall not forget because I have jotted the tasks down in my organizer.
