Have you ever thought of selling candles? Why not, right? Candles are often used as decorative items to lighten up the interior of a room, or lit up to set the mood for a romantic dinner. Scented candles are also very popular these days, and are most loved by busy women. For example, the natural and soothing fragrant from a lavender-scented candle helps relax and unwind a tired body and stressed mind while one soaks in the bath tub. So, it may be a good idea to start a candle business if you personally have some interest in scented candles.
There are several ways to start a candle business. There are many direct sales companies that give you the freedom of running your own business while they supply the candles. Of course, you can also make your own candles and your own business from scratch if that is what you prefer.
What skills do you need?
If you’re doing it from scratch, you’ll probably want to learn how to make candles from A to Z. You can pick up the necessary skills from someone experienced, or study yourself through books or attend candle making classes.
If you prefer the direct sales approach, than you will be likely doing home parties as a means to sell your products. You will need to be comfortable with a room full of people and being the center of attention.
What tools do you need?
If you are beginning your candle business through a direct sales company you will probably be required to purchase one of their kits. Your kit will provide you with enough merchandise to get you started.
If you are making your own candles, you will need basic ingredients such as wax, molds, scents, wicks, dyes and pan. You can learn how to make 9 types of candles and what the necessary tools are from an ebook called Step-by-step Beginner’s Guide to Making Candles. Click here to learn more!
I have my candles, now how to get the business started?
A good first step is to set up a website so that you can begin to build an online presence. Once your website is up and running you can start marketing yourself. Candles can easily be marketed offline by giving them out as gifts or renting a booth at a local craft fair and showing them there.
Online it can be a little trickier especially if you have joined a direct sales business where the competition is stiff but if you begin networking with people through message boards or forums. You will be building up personal relationships, and soon you will find that people are coming to you to purchase candles.
It’s also a good idea to have some business cards printed up so that you have them available to hand out. Flyers can also be used to market your business offline. Post them at places with lots of human traffic, e.g. local grocery stores, the library, etc.
Building a candle business is going to take time especially if you have chosen to make the candles yourself. Setting daily and weekly goals for your business will help you move forward. Also, no matter how small the triumphs you achieved, remember to celebrate them and keep going!
